Our Little Green Friend!

My partner is crazy about having a herb garden. He wanted to grow everything from scratch. Since I love to cook, and the best thing to have when cooking is fresh ingredients, I was immediately on board. This past Summer we went out and picked up some colourful plant pots, did a little research and got some seeds to plant. Since it was the Summer and we had a small balcony with lots of sun, the plants did pretty well. He would go out and care for the plants every day and it became exciting and magical for both of us to watch them grow.

With our move into our new apartment this Fall things have changed. There is little to no sun, we have no balcony and many of our plants have died. It has been sad to watch the slow decay of the bright green plants, and every effort to keep them alive has failed. We have now gone from 12 pots of fresh herbs to 4 pots of fresh herbs. We have started to resort to either buying expensive packets of basil, rosemary, thyme etc at the grocery or using the dried alternative.

Recently though, the most amazing thing happened. One of the pots started to sprout a new plant. As we head into the darkest and coldest days of the year, this little bud has emerged against all odds. It has been inspiring to watch the little one grow and we have become obsessed with looking after him and encouraging him in his struggle upward. It reminds me of the fact that no matter what time of year and against all odds, there is always renewal in all areas of our lives. Every day is a new experience and especially around the holidays with our families and friends, this truth should be cherished.
